Several health organizations plan to work together to reduce the toll of colon cancer in Kentucky, which has the second-highest death rate from the disease in the nation. They hope to do this by improving screening rates, which trail the national average because many people lack access to care, said Angela Champion, executive director of The Colon Cancer Prevention Project.
March has been Colon Cancer Screening Awareness Month. Colon cancer is the second-leading cancer killer in the United States — right behind lung cancer. The American Cancer Society (ACS) reports nearly 150,000 cases will be detected this year, and 60,000 people are expected to die from the disease.
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is hosting a colon cancer awareness event Wednesday night in Voorhees , NJ with a former Eagle in the starting line-up.
Screening for colon cancer is generally recommended for anyone 50 or older. 90% of cases occur after that age. Researchers analyzed more than 160,000 colon cancer cases.
